Part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, Udzungwa is a forested, mountainous park built around hiking trails rather than vehicle-based game drives. It's known for high levels of endemism, including primate species found nowhere else, and is best suited to travellers with a specific interest in forest ecology and walking rather than classic Big Five viewing.
Wildlife of Udzungwa
The park holds several endemic and near-endemic primate species, including the Sanje mangabey, alongside diverse forest birdlife. Unlike the rest of the Southern Circuit, Udzungwa does not offer traditional game drives — all wildlife viewing is on foot.

Guided rainforest hikes ranging from short trails to multi-day treks are the park's core activity, often combined with waterfall visits.

The dry season offers easier hiking conditions; trails can be significantly more difficult during the heaviest rains.

Reached by road from Dar es Salaam or as an add-on to a Mikumi-based southern itinerary, generally 5–6 hours by road from Dar es Salaam.
